The British film industry received a welcome boost in 1995 with the release of the highly acclaimed Brassed Off "Mining Movie", starring Hollywood Oscar nominee Pete Postletwaite as the dedicated leader
of The Band!. The production was dedicated to the all to common scenario surrounding a Coal
mining community who faced the closure of Their Pit, those of us who have first hand experiance of the decline in mining know
only to well, the effect it has. Brassed Off continues to attract a large attendance when it is shown at cinemas around the UK, whilst viewing figures for its TV premier in the autumn of 1999, were astounding, a Classic to
behold!. This web site is proud to be linked with
many would say, the real stars of the film, The Grimethorpe Colliery Band who are the 1999 United Kingdom Brass
in Concert Champions. This association comes after Mr Postletwaite discussed the possibility of officially opening Meadow Pit Memorial Gardens in the year 2000, his
home is just a few miles away in Shropshire's Stretton Hills .
Miner's worked hard and played hard from the soul, their dedication to their tasks, and commitment to their families & community has been well documented, but as history has shown did so at great personal cost with countless thousands paying the ultimate price.
God fearing Men, Women & Children who responded to the rallying call of The Band, members in most cases were miners them selves, and it was common place to see and hear
their moods and feelings conveyed though their
music. The message of pride and commitment
from the work force, was usualy endorsed with the marching band escorting The Flag! better know as The Banner!.
Whilst many bands became extinct with the closure of the mines, many continue to thrill the nation and their local community, here in
Telford the Jackfield Elcock Reisen Band rank highly in the true tradition. Based
across the River Severn at Jackfield, they go from strength to strength, supported by Elcock's, a leading Coach and Tour Operator
based here in Madeley.
